The former personal attorney to adult film actress Stormy Daniels, who garnered fame for his outspokenly anti-Trump antics, is set to be charged with several crimes.
“BREAKING: Attorney Michael Avenatti criminally charged with four counts of extortion and related conspiracy counts. Press conference at 2:30 pm,” said Courthouse News reporter Adam Klasfeld on Twitter.
CNBC is also reporting that Avenatti will be charged with wire and bank fraud.
“Celebrity lawyer Michael Avenattii has been arrested on charges related to an alleged $20 million extortion of the athletic apparel company Nike, federal authorities said Monday,” the report said.
The indictment will be handed down the day after Attorney General William P. Barr announced that there no evidence of collusion or obstruction of justice on behalf of President Donald J. Trump’s 2016 campaign.
Avenatti garnered fame and millions of dollars worth of free press from the leftist mainstream media while he represented Daniels in a lawsuit against Trump, which she ultimately lost. He then continued to inject himself into national politics, famously claiming that Donald Trump Jr. would be indicted as part of the Russiagate conspiracy theory before the end of 2018.
On January 1, right wing commentators dunked on him for that claim.
He was also involved in the Supreme Court confirmation saga of Justice Brett Kavanaugh, representing a woman who accused now-Justice Kavanaugh of “gang rape.”
The huckster attorney briefly flirted with a 2020 presidential campaign in the midst of being accused of domestic abuse by an ex-girlfriend. He was later evicted from his law office and accused of hiding millions of dollars from a bankruptcy court.
