Canada Backs Away From Rifle Ban

By Jose Nino

On February 3, 2023, the Trudeau regime eliminated several provisions of a gun control bill that aimed to prohibit thousands of rifles and shotguns that lawful hunters and farmers used.

This decision came after this gun grab provoked fierce backlash from gun rights proponents, hunters, farmers, and even indigenous leaders.

Following the Uvalde, Texas massacre of May 2022, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau put forward legislation that would prohibit the purchase, sale or transfer of handguns and establish a mandatory buyback program for approximately 1,500 firearms banned in 2020 following the deadliest massacre in Canadian history, in the maritime province of Nova Scotia.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, elected officials of Trudeau’s Liberal Party introduced amendments that widened the scope of firearm ban to encompass thousands of rifles and shotguns. The Trudeau regime announced on February 3 that it scrapped its wider firearm prohibition.

Canadian Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino claimed that the Trudeau regime is now mostly focused on banning so-called “assault-style” weapons, “not guns commonly used for hunting. Hunting isn’t just a proud Canadian tradition. It’s a way of life for communities across this country.”

In the present, Canadian gun owners must obtain a license to buy and possess a firearm and to buy ammunition. Licenses must be renewed every five years. Canadian gun owners must acquire licenses from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Once applicants meet certain public safety requirements and pass several tests, the national police force issues these permits.

According to recent RCMP figures, there are 2.2 million license holders and 1.2 million firearms registered in Canada. Gun owners in Canada can breathe a temporary sigh of relief. Knowing, Gun Control Inc though, these people will not rest. Especially, in a country like Canada, which has very little respect for the right to bear arms.

Due to the Left’s nearly monolithic control of Canadian cultural and political institutions, it’s only a matter of time before the country totally falls prey to the civilian disarmament lobby. Sadly, this is the fate of many countries who don’t have much of a tradition of American-style folk libertarianism.
