Following five other states, Louisiana sent a bill to the desk of Democratic Party Gov. John Bel Edwards that would ban abortion after a heartbeat is detected, according to multiple reports.
Edwards is expected to sign the bill, breaking with his party on a major social issue.
“As I prepare to sign this bill, I call on the overwhelming bipartisan majority of legislators who voted for it to join me in continuing to build a better Louisiana that cares for the least among us and provides more opportunity for everyone,” he said in a statement.
Edwards has a pro-life record throughout his political career, and ran for governor on a pro-life platform. The bill has no exceptions for rape or incest, but does make an exception if the life of the mother is in danger.
Ohio, Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama, and Missouri have all passed similar legislation in what is widely considered a push by conservatives to challenge the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision.
Gov. Brian Kemp of Georgia began the latest wave of pro-life legislation earlier this month.

The governor of Georgia kept his promise to sign a pro-life bill into law, signaling significant support for the pro-life community.
Gov. Brian Kemp signed the Living Infants Fairness and Equality (LIFE) Act, passed in both chambers of the Georgia Congress, which “will prohibit abortions in the state after a heartbeat is detected, as early as six weeks into a pregnancy,” according to Fox News.
The law is nicknamed “the heartbeat bill” because it bans abortions after a baby’s heart begins to beat. There are exceptions for cases of rape, incest, and if the mother’s life is in danger.
“Georgia is a state that values life,” Kemp reportedly said just before signing the bill. “We stand up for those who are unable to speak for themselves.”
