Former General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev is pointing to this month’s US Capitol riot as an orchestrated affair, claiming the breaching of Congress was planned beforehand by actors he declined to expressly identify.
“The assault on the Capitol was evidently planned in advance, and it is clear by whom,” the 89-year old Gorbachev told Interfax some time after the raucous protest. Gorbachev declined to identify who he believes organized the riot.
Gorbachev may have been referring to Donald Trump, but notions of Trump planning the capitol event ahead of time contrast with allegations of incitement on the part of the President at a morning rally as protestors descended upon the Capitol.
“It will take some time, but we will understand why this was really done,” predicted Gorbachev, raising more questions than answers as to who he blames for the event.
Gorbachev even went so far as to state that the Capitol events “called into question the future fate of the United States as a state.” Gorbachev presided over the declining Soviet Union as its satellite republics seceded.
Gorbachev served as the final leader of the Soviet Leader from 1985, briefly holding the office of President of the USSR as the superpower collapsed. When it became clear that the Soviet Union was untenable, he resigned, allowing its dissolution and the creation of the Russian Federation. However, attempts at economic liberalization ended in disaster, with oligarchs seizing ownership of nearly all the former Soviet Union’s publicly owned industries.
