Rep. Justin Amash’s hatred of President Trump may inspire the five-term Michigan congressman to run for President in 2020.
Rep. Amash (R-MI) decided to break the news on Twitter, apparently feeling emboldened by having taken up the mantle of King of the Never Trumpers from former Sen. Jeff Flake, who was run from office in disgrace.
Amash released a cryptic tweet earlier this week, geekily quoting “Lord of the Rings” by J.R.R. Tolkien in a manner to indicate that a Presidential run may be in order even though he knows he has no real chance to win.
Amash, who was nowhere to be found during President Trump’s massive rally in his hometown of Grand Rapids last night, has flirted with the idea of running for President in the recent past. He told a reporter in January that his ideal third-party candidate “wears Air Jordans” while wearing Air Jordans at the time. Amash addressed the issue at length during an interview with libertarian podcaster Marc Clair earlier this month.
“Well, it’s more on my radar every day, because I keep getting asked about it now,” Amash said during an interview on the Lions of Liberty podcast. “I think there were just some people sort of talking about it on social media, and then Jake Tapper must have picked up on that and asked me the question, so now more people are talking about it. So obviously I’m thinking about it a little more.”
Amash may leave the Republicans behind completely and become the standard bearer for the Libertarian Party, which has achieved relevance only as a laughingstock since its inception in 1971.
“I just think it’s important that we offer some alternative. And I think we need someone out there who can be a bridge for people, who can present a libertarian message but also bring people together. And I think the libertarian message is one that unites people across the political spectrum,” Amash said.
“Most people who aren’t politically active, who are just at home and don’t want to have to think about government, they kind of want our government to just stay out of their lives for the most part, stop messing things up, and stop dividing everyone,” he added, failing to point out how Trump’s tax cuts and regulatory rollbacks have helped ordinary Americans by getting the government off their backs.
Amash’s competition for the Libertarian Party nomination would include tech privacy advocate and whale lover John McAfee and steadfast defender of underage relations Arvin Vohra. Amash could conceivably beat those individuals in a primary challenge, secure the Libertarian Party nomination for President in 2020, and be the ‘Never Trump’ protest option in Michigan like Evan McMullin was for Utah back in 2016.
The globalist liberaltarians at Reason Magazine are thrilled at the prospect of Amash running a sabotage campaign against Trump in 2020. They have documented and promoted Amash’s change from Ron Paul revolutionary into Jeff Flake wanna-be for years now:
While Koch brothers functionaries and irrelevant third-party backers may love the idea of Amash turning his back on party and country, he should take into consideration his fellow liberty stalwarts in Congress – like Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) and Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) – as well as his pro-Trump constituents before making such a self-serving decision.
