Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently wrote a letter directed to the House Judiciary Committee declaring he regrets not being more vocal about “government pressure” from the Biden regime to “censor” content on its platforms.
“Like I said to our teams at the time, I feel strongly that we should not compromise our content standards due to pressure from any Administration in either direction,” he declared in the letter.
The letter was addressed to House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan. Zuckerberg admitted that there is “a lot of talk right now” regarding the way the US government interacts with social media giants such as Meta, which is the parent company of Instagram and Facebook.
The letter was sent on August 26, 2024. Zuckerberg claimed that Meta has sent over “thousands of documents” for the committee to investigate and will have its employees available to interview. To continue helping out with the investigation, Zuckerberg revealed he was writing the letter to disclose what he’s “taken away from this process.”
The House Judiciary Committee GOP’s Facebook page shared the letter. In the post, it said that it was a “big win for free speech.”
“Mark Zuckerberg just admitted three things: 1. Biden-Harris Admin ‘pressured’ Facebook to censor Americans. 2. Facebook censored Americans. 3. Facebook throttled the Hunter Biden laptop story,” the GOP panel wrote.
“In 2021, senior officials from the Biden Administration, including the White House, repeatedly pressured our teams for months to censor certain COVID-19 content, including humor and satire, and expressed a lot of frustration with our teams when we didn’t agree,” Zuckerberg noted in the letter.
Zuckerberg believes that the Biden regime’s pressure was “wrong” and that the social media giant was not “more outspoken” on the question at that juncture. He continued by noting that Meta carried out decisions that the company would not implement in the present with “the benefit of hindsight and new information.”
He added in the letter: “We’re ready to push back if something like this happens again.”
Zuckerberg claims that the FBI cautioned Meta about a “potential Russian disinformation operation” as the 2020 presidential election between Joe Biden and former President Trump rapidly approached.
He highlighted in the letter that this potential operation concerned the Biden family and its connections to Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company with close ties to president Biden’s son Hunter Biden.
During the 2020 presidential election cycle when Biden was the Democratic presidential nominee, Meta demoted an article from the New York Post concerning corruption allegations against Biden.
“We sent that story to fact-checkers for review and temporarily demoted it while waiting for a reply,” Zuckerberg remarked. “It’s since been made clear that the reporting was not Russian disinformation, and in retrospect, we shouldn’t have demoted the story.”
