As reported Friday by Big League Politics, Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) amended a bill that he sponsored that would have protected religious Americans against discrimination for holding pro-traditional marriage views.
The amended language of the First Amendment Defense Act now recognizes gay marriage as legal for the first time in U.S. History, a fact that Lee and his spokespeople initially denied.
“FADA does absolutely no such thing,” said Conn Carroll, Lee’s Communications Director and anti-Trumper, in a comment that was received after publication of the original story.
“I’ve introduced a bill that would prohibit the federal government from punishing any individual or group on the basis of a religious belief about the definition of marriage,” said in Facebook post attacking the story.
But that’s not the question. Our first article did not make that claim, and Lee’s deflection does not help his case.
After numerous denials, and calling the original story “one of the most irresponsible pieces of reporting [he’s] ever seen,” Lee bitterly admitted that there is no other language in the U.S. Code that recognizes gay marriage.
“We’re trying to establish a viewpoint-neutral policy with regards to religious beliefs concerning marriage,” Lee added. This, of course, confirms what we have previously reported. Senator Mike Lee has embraced gay marriage.
Finally the Senator admits that he’s given up all hope to restore the Biblical definition of marriage between one man and one woman, “it hasn’t previously been codified in federal legislation, but the Supreme Court has embraced as a matter of federal constitutional law.”
Saying that the Supreme Court has recognized gay marriage as matter of law is an argument that any high school civics can see through. The Supreme Court once ruled that former slaves could not be citizens. The Supremes interpret law, they do not make law. Making law is Lee’s job, along with his buddies in Congress.
Big League Politics then asked Lee why – if his bill does not recognize gay marriage in federal law – that Liberty Counsel, a prominent Christian litigation firm immediately switched from actively supporting his original bill to actively fighting his amended bill, calling it a “trojan horse.”
Mat Staver, Founder and Chairman of Liberty Counsel and a lawyer himself, confirmed to Big League Politics before publication of the original story that Lee’s bill would recognize gay marriage for the first time in U.S. law.
Lee did not respond to this request for comment.
