Longtime political operative and Trump advisor Roger Stone is threatening to challenge Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in the 2022 election, suggesting he’d act as a spoiler unless DeSantis pledges to forgo the possibility of challenging ex-President Donald Trump in the 2024 GOP primary.
Mr. Stone made the remarks in an interview with CBS Miami released on Saturday.
“I believe that Governor DeSantis should pledge to the people of Florida that he will fill out all four years of a second term. I don’t want to see him reelected and immediately abandon Florida to run off for President, particularly if he’s running against Donald Trump.“
Stone is demanding that DeSantis firmly commit to serving four years of a second term as Florida Governor, objecting to the idea that any politician could use Florida as a stepping stone to national political office.
Stone suggested he could run as a member of the Libertarian Party, potentially drawing support he believes could make him the spoiler of DeSantis’ reelection. Stone, a critic of DeSantis, suggested that he opposed the prospect of a DeSantis presidential campaign even if Trump doesn’t run, citing what he sees as DeSantis connections to big money donors and establishment politics.
Stone’s gambit may ultimately be unnecessary, with political polling of the tentative 2024 GOP primary suggesting that the 45th President would easily cruise to a renomination with a majority of Republican primary votes. The Democratic Party appears increasingly hesitant to even field a serious candidate against DeSantis, with the popular Florida Governor broadly popular in his state.
