Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov Declares New “Iron Curtain” is Emerging Between Russia and the West

By Jose Nino

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov proclaimed on June 30, 2022 that an “Iron Curtain” is being erected between Russia and the Collective West. His remarks came the day after NATO deemed Russia to be NATO’s “most significant and direct threat” to European security.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, the Collective West has imposed heavy sanctions on Russia and has armed Ukraine to the hilt. The goal NATO is pursuing is to bleed Russia out and diplomatically isolate it.

To stoke further tensions, NATO formally invited countries such as Finland and Sweden into the military alliance on June 29. Russia responded hostilely describing NATO’s move as “a purely destabilizing factor.”

According to a Press TV report, NATO published a 10-year strategic policy at the NATO summit on June 29, which labeled Russia as  the “most significant and direct threat” to the security of its members.

Back in 2010, NATO published a strategic policy document, which described Russia as a “strategic partner.” This marks a significant shift in NATO’s position towards Russia.

On June 30, Lavrov proclaimed that a new “iron curtain” was being formed between Russia and the West in the aftermath of Russia’s incursion into Ukraine.

“As far as an iron curtain is concerned, essentially it is already descending. They should just be careful not to pinch anything,” Lavrov said during a press conference. Lavrov added, “The process has begun.”

The Iron Curtain refers to the metaphorical barrier that the Soviet Union erected, where it largely isolated itself economically, ideologically, militarily, and politically from the West after World War II.

Furthermore, Lavrov revealed that Russia has not had any meaningful relations with the European Union since 2014, when the Euromaidan conflict kicked off. This saw Crimea vote to join the Russian Federation and secessionist movements kick off in Eastern Ukraine.

Lavrov emphasized that the Russian government would not trust Washington and Brussels “from now on”, noting that “The EU is not at all interested in understanding our interests.”

Lavrov warned that the United States’ constant flood of weapons into Ukraine will only prolong the conflict and create more bloodshed.

There is clearly a systemic breakdown of the current world order. A new Eurasian geopolitical bloc is emerging to balance against the Collective West’s encroachments. The neoliberal, unipolar order to the 1990s and early aughts is over and new security arrangements are unfolding on the world stage.

From the looks of it, many Western policymakers have not adjusted to this new reality.
