The United States government has been enthusiastically pursuing an America Last agenda in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in late February. To its credit, the US has not sent any ground forces…at least for the time being. However, the US government has been fanatically committed to arming Ukraine to the teeth and pouring billions in financial aid as it staves off a Russian invasion.
While the war is a geopolitical tragedy, there’s no pressing interest that justifies waging a proxy war, much less a conventional war against Russia.
On the other hand, the situation taking place at the US-Mexico border constitutes an existential threat to American security. Despite this, the DC Swamp insists on dumping massive aid into Ukraine in an effort to trap Russia into a massive military quagmire.
Texas Congressman Troy Nehls tried to bring DC back to reality by putting this orgy of spending directed to Ukraine in perspective. He tweeted on May 17, 2022, “If this Ukraine funding bill passes, we will be spending 8 times the annual budget of the U.S. Border Patrol on a foreign country.”
Talk about having misplaced political priorities.
Instead of focusing on the border and taking violent Mexican cartels head on, the US government would rather indulge in a fantastical geopolitical project against a nuclear power.
That’s post-national USA for you.
Hopefully, the America First Republicans running in the 2022 election cycle come out victorious and impose a new political reality in DC where border security and a restrained foreign policy becomes the norm. The status quo of “Invade the World, Invite the World” will lead to an inevitable process of imperial decay — an all-too familiar scene in American history.
This fate could be avoided if the US has a right-wing populist ruling class.
