On Friday, January 24, 2020, President Donald Trump will be the first president to give a speech at one of the premier pro-life events in the country.
Trump is set to deliver an in-person speech at March for Life, a rally held annually in Washington, where pro-life activists gather to protest the legalization of abortion.
March for Life is 47 years old and has taken place every year since the landmark Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision which made abortion legal.
In 2019, Vice President Mike Pence made a surprise appearance at the rally before roughly 100,000 attendees.
The president also sent out a message of support for the cause to rally participants via live video.
Jeanne Mancini, president of the organizing group, praised the announcement in a statement, declaring Trump has remained loyal to the anti-abortion movement.
“From the appointment of pro-life judges and federal workers, to cutting taxpayer funding for abortions here and abroad, to calling for an end to late-term abortions, President Trump and his administration have been consistent champions for life and their support for the March for Life has been unwavering,” she stated. “We are grateful for all these pro-life accomplishments and look forward to gaining more victories for life in the future.”
This announcement was made on the anniversary of Roe.
Initially, the pro-life movement was skeptical of Trump’s anti-abortion credentials. However, his efforts to cut taxpayer funding for abortion and his calls for ending late-term abortion has won the pro-life movement over and they now view Trump as a champion for pro-life causes.
