Bethesda Games Studios Celebrates Pride™ Month- Everywhere But the Middle East and Russia

Bethesda Softworks, the AAA-sized video game development studio based in Maryland, is keen on celebrating the June observance of homosexual Pride month- everywhere but the company’s studios in the Middle East and Russia.

Bethesda is one of the biggest game developers in the industry, having developed and published titles such as Fallout and the Elder Scrolls.

Every one of the Bethesda games subsidiaries changed their Twitter icon to a rainbow-colored version of the company’s logo, right on queue with the commencement of June. But at least three studios conspicuously skipped the festivities, keeping the standard Bethesda logo that the company maintains for the other 12 months of the year.

It’s probably no coincidence that the company’s Middle East office declined to celebrate Pride Month, considering the market demographic of the region broadly opposes homosexuality. But it does go to show that the company’s western entities are going through the motions as little more than a public relations stunt. If they really cared about promoting pride, maybe they’d have the courage to actually do it in a market where it might be controversial.

Further investigation reveals that Bethesda local offices in Poland and Russia also declined to formally recognize gay pride month.

Taking a brave stance in support of diversity- unless it means actually risking precious profit margins.
