BIG: Freshman Democrats Have Had Enough of Pelosi, Ready for Border Wall

The President’s holdout is causing ripples in the Democratic Party.

A Tuesday Breitbart article compiled all of the young Democrats in Congress who are ready to make a deal with President Donald J. Trump on the border wall, bucking party leader and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

Her compadre, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) urged Democrats to stay unified on the issue on Wednesday morning.

But it appears that Chuck and Nancy are having a difficult time keeping their young guns in line. Several freshman Democrats in Congress are speaking out against party leadership, and want to make a deal with the President.

“It is time for congressional leaders and President Donald Trump ‘to stop hiding and show a little leadership’ to end the longest federal government shutdown in the nation’s history,” freshman Rep. Jared Golden (D-Maine) told the Lewiston Sun Journal. ”

Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.), also a first-term Congressperson, apparently agrees with Golden.

“There’s a number of us on the Democratic side who are quite concerned that we’re not working on negotiated positions and taking the bull by the horns and trying to think about what it would look like,” Slotkin told Wall Street Journal

New York Democratic Rep. Max Rose is ready to wheel and deal too.

“All we’ve done in the House is repass the Senate bill. Now that will allow us some freedom, some space, some real debate. The Senate, though, has to show their independence. I just got out of a bruising fight with my House leadership. Let’s open the government back up and let’s get back to work,” he said, adding that he was sick of government shutdowns being used as negotiation tactics.

The same goes for freshman Rep. Anthony Brandisi (D-N.Y.), who – get this – is listening to border security experts and is apparently interested in doing what’s best for the American people, which is a fresh new look for a Democrat.

“If you listen to all the experts, they’ll say some elements of physical barriers where it makes sense are in order. We need more border agents, we need more technology at our border crossings and ports of entries so trucks and shipping containers are inspected before coming into our country,” Brandisi reportedly said.

According to Breitbart, several other young Democrats, including Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.), who said her constituents were concerned that they were not being prioritized, Rep. Colin Allred (D-Texas), who wouldn’t “rule out” a compromise with Trump, Rep. Lucy McBath (D-Ga.), who is actively seeking to compromise with the President, and Rep. Jeff Van Drew (D-N.J.), who said he would vote for compromise.

Breitbart noted that some Democrats even want a wall, including Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-Ill.), and Rep. Katherine Clark (D-Mass.), both of whom have publicly expressed support for a physical barrier.

The Democrats backing away from the fight on this issue shows that Trump is winning. He should stay the course until the wall is fully funded and construction is underway.

Gov. Ron DeSantis Puts Anti-E-Verify Republicans On Notice

Some Republicans want to water down the proposal.

As a battle over a strong statewide E-Verify law heats up in Tallahassee, Florida Governor Rick DeSantis is cautioning Republicans who seek to neuter the law over the ire they’ll face from conservative voters.

Florida is set to pass a E-Verify law that will prevent businesses from hiring illegal immigrants as workers. Currently in the Florida Senate committee process, big business interests are seeking to institute special exemptions for industries that commonly hire illegals.

DeSantis is pushing back hard against the effort to put free passes in the legislation for the agricultural industry. Another area of contention is over the law’s enforcement mechanism. Elements seeking to neuter the Florida E-Verify system want employers to merely promise they aren’t hiring illegals, as opposed to making them definitively prove it.

DeSantis was clear about warning Republicans who try to neuter the e-Verify proposal when speaking to the press outside of the state capital on Wednesday.

DeSantis’ warning to Republicans who tacitly support giveaways of cheap labor and non-enforcement of immigration law should be taken seriously by any legislator who considers themselves a conservative, and relies upon a conservative constituency.

Senator Tom Lee, who represents Florida’s 20th district, is cautioning that Governor DeSantis could veto the entire bill and force lawmakers to start over if they stuff it full of exemptions for scofflaw big business interests. He says that the effort to make employers merely promise to hire illegals is no different than instituting an impotent “honor system.”

The law currently will mandate that businesses in Florida verify their employees’ legal status by July of 2022.
