Black Man Charged with ‘Racially Motivated’ Murder in New Jersey

A Monmouth County, New Jersey man has been charged with murder after beating another man into a vegetative state, eventually leading to the man’s death five months later.

Jamil S. Hubbard, 26, “has been charged with first-degree murder and felony murder in a brutal, deadly attack prosecutors say was racially motivated,” according to New Jersey 101.5.

“His alleged victim, 55-year-old Jerry Wolkowitz died last October, five months after being beaten so badly that he had remained in a vegetative state ever since the attack, according to a GoFundMe campaign to help with his medical expenses,” the report said.

The original incident occurred in May. Prosecutors said that Hubbard attacked Wolkowitz from behind, pummeling his head and face. Wolkowitz was then dragged into a parking lot, where Hubbard allegedly ran Wolkowitz over in his Chevrolet Malibu, and then stole Wolkowitz’s Kia Forte.

“Police have said Hubbard, who is black, did not know Wolkowitz, who is white, prior to the attack,” according to the report.

According to Asbury Park PressWolkowitz was both an Emergency Medical Technician and a photojournalist. His work appeared in the Asbury Park Press.
