BOJO To Resign As UK’s Prime Minister
The United Kingdom is in for a wild ride! After months of furious calls by opponents for his resignation, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson agreed to step down from the role Thursday after many of his closest allies and cabinet members began leaving their posts in office.
Johnson’s decision to resign was primarily fueled by his involvement in the scandal known as “partygate” — revelations that he and other government officials held large gatherings during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic as Britons were forcedb y the state to be locked down or face threats of fines and possibly jail.
The British prime minister said Thursday that he plans to step down from the position once a successor has been officially chosen.
Many were unsurprised by Johnson’s decision to at last quit the job — he was arguably drawing far more criticism during this year of his leadership as compared to before.
“It is clearly now the will of the parliamentary Conservative Party that there should be a new leader of that party and therefore a new prime minister,” he announced.
“I agreed with Sir Graham Brady, the chairman of our backbench MPs, that the process of choosing a new leader should begin now,” he added. “And the timetable will be announced next week.”
“I have today appointed a Cabinet to serve — as I will — until a new leader is in place.”
“In politics, no one is remotely indispensable,” he added. “To that new leader — whoever he or she may be — I say I will give you as much support as I can.”
Johnson expressed his dismay over the prospects of resigning and thanked his countrymen for their support over the last four years.
“I know that there will be many people who are relieved and perhaps quite a few will also be disappointed, and I want you to know how sad I am to be giving up the best job in the world.”
Breitbart News reported that calls for Johnson’s resignation had remained constant over the past several months, with the prime minister constantly refusing in response. However, he soon cracked after several resignations in his cabinet the past few days, including that of treasury minister and ally Nadhim Zahawi.
United States White House occupant Joe Biden paid little attention to Boris Johnson’s big news — he appeared to largely ignore the entire ordeal when speaking about Britain Thursday.
