Are citizens around the world facing a return to the old days of draconian lockdowns enacted in reaction to a viral outbreak? A new report out of Belgium appears to confirm the first ever documented case of a nation implementing a mandatory monkeypox quarantine.

The European nation had called for the forced quarantine after it had hosted a massive gay pride festival that had as many as 80,000 attendees.

“Those infected with the monkeypox virus must be in isolation for 21 days,” the Dutch publication Standaard reported on a page translated from Dutch to English. “Not high-risk contacts, but they’re best watching over any symptoms. In the meantime, virologist Marc Van Ranst wants to investigate whether the virus can spread airborne.”

Belgium’s Gran Canaria pride festival drew international attention as a ‘superspreader’ event by various media outlets after people from all around the world learned of infections upon return to their home countries.

“The Gran Canarian pride festival attended by 80,000 from Britain and across Europe is being investigated after being linked to numerous monkeypox cases in Madrid, Italy and Tenerife,” the Daily Mail reported.

The aftermentioned Daily Mail article appears to be foreshadowing future issues with the monkeypox virus, calling in health ‘experts’ to weigh in on the matter:

“What worries me the most is there are infections across Europe, so this has already spread,” said the United Kingdom’s Dr. Claire Dewsnap. “It’s already circulating in the general population… It could be really significant numbers over the next two or three weeks.”

“Held between May 5 and May 15, Maspalomas Pride attracts visitors from across the continent,” the report continued. “It was attended by people who have tested positive for the monkeypox virus afterwards, with public health services from the Canary Islands now investigating the any links between the cases and the LGBT+ celebrations.”

Becker News reported that a health source stated there are around 30 people diagnosed with the virus in Madrid, Spain.

The World Health Organization announced Friday that monkeypox has been found in 11 countries that “normally don’t have the disease.”

Meanwhile, in the United States, a New York City resident was reported as testing positive for the monkeypox virus Friday.
