Congressional Democrats Push for Background Checks for Ammo Purchases

California Congressman Robert Garcia and Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren have been pushing legislation to mandate background checks for ammunition purchases. Other Democrats such as Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz have joined them in pushing for this new restriction on the right to bear arms.

The Democrats are calling for the passage the Ammunition Modernization and Monitoring Oversight Act, or AMMO Act for short. In addition to requiring background checks for ammo purchases, Redstate called attention to how the Act would also restrict the number of rounds lawful citizens can purchase during a five-day period and mandate that ammo dealers obtain a license in addition to  the Federal Firearms License (FFL) that is needed for carrying out gun sales.

Garcia said the following about this legislation: “If we’re ever going to really take on the gun violence epidemic in this country, we need to regulate ammo accessibility. This bill aims to protect the American public from the devastating violence that occurs when individuals have access to unlimited amounts of weaponry.”

Warren also declared the following about the Act, stating, “The Ammo Act is a common-sense step to restrict ammunition sales, strengthen federal oversight of those sales, and help end the epidemic of gun violence in America.”

The Ammo Act would also prohibit out-of-state ammunition purchases. In effect, the passage of this legislation would nationalize California’s gun control policies. In the Golden State, out of state ammo purchases are prohibited, in-state purchases are limited to vendors approved by the state, and individuals must undergo background checks for ammo purchases.

California bans out of state ammo purchases, limits in-state purchasers to state approved vendors only, and requires a background check for ammunition purchases. According to Everytown for Gun Safety, a civilian disarmament organization funded by Michael Bloomberg, California is ranked in the #1 spot gun control strength. It’s also ranked in 48th place according to Guns & Ammo magazine’s best states for gun owners rankings.

All things considered, California is an anti-gun safe space. This state is where gun rights go to die. Any individual who cherishes the Second Amendment should do everything possible to keep tabs on what’s going on in California. After all, whatever gun control is being proposed here will likely be used as a template for gun grabs at the federal level.
