Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy Pushes for Banning AR-15s After Maine Attacks
In response to the Lewiston, Maine mass shooting of October 26, 2023, Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy called for the passage of an “assault weapons” ban.
During the shooting, the gunman used a sniper rifle with .308 caliber to murder 18 people.
Murphy declared in an X post, “Another deeply mentally ill man, armed with a military semi-automatic rifle, commits mass murder. This isn’t hard. a. Keep weapons away from potentially dangerous people. b. Don’t let anyone have an assault weapon.”
He asserted that complying with his action plan would lead to a reduction in “mass shootings” without infringing on anyone’s Second Amendment rights.
Murphy’s comments are to be expected from an elected official from Connecticut — one of the most anti-gun states in the country. Per Guns & Ammo magazine’s best states for gun owners rankings, Connecticut is ranked in 45th place, making it one of the most anti-gun jurisdictions in the country.
The fact of the matter is that gun control won’t stop mass shootings. More often than not these shootings transpire in gun-free zones, which allow deranged criminals to terrorize defenseless victims at will. Moreover, the US has a major mental health problem that’s a product of an increasingly atomized society and a dilapidated mental health infrastructure.
Gun control will simply not fix these problems.
