Countless Indiana Firearms Buyers’ Private Information Face the Risk of Being Disclosed

On December 16, 2023, the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) general counsel and senior Vice President Larry Keane posted on X to warn about the risks of public disclosure.

Keane said the following:

Personal Information of (100s of) Thousands of Indiana Gun Owners at Risk for Public Disclosure – https://go.shr.lc/48igg67 via @Ammoland @NSSF @NRAILA @GunOwners

Gun Owners of America’s Aidan Johnson called attention to the issue on X, highlighted that a lawsuit resulted in Acquisition and Distribution (A&D) books from an Indiana Cabela’s being handed over to the government. He also noted that A&D books from an Indiana Bass Pro Shop could soon be handed over.

At Ammoland, Lee Williams brought attention to how “the potential publication of personal information of hundreds of thousands of law-abiding gun owners is eerily similar to an interactive map of pistol permit holders that Gannett’s Journal News of Westchester County, New York published in 2012.”

Williams observed the following:

The response to the [Journal News‘s] map was vicious and loud. Outraged gun owners pushed for the publication of the addresses of the journalists responsible for the travesty. The danger, many claimed, was that the newspaper created a handy tool for burglars seeking to break into homes and steal firearms. The same concerns apply to Indiana’s gun owners.

Back in December 18, 2023, NSSF’s Keane highlighted that NSSF is working to pass legislation in Indiana to halt the A&D book acquisitions. The disclosure of gun owner information is one of the more overlooked threats that gun owners face these days.

This underscores one of the dangers of gun registries and other databases with gun owner information. Both predatory governments and criminals can take advantage of this information to violate gun owners rights and make their lives miserable.

For that reason, such types of databases should adamantly be opposed.
