Democrat Civil War: Nancy Pelosi Trashes AOC’s Policies, Says They Won’t Win Elections
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi slammed Freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at an event in the United Kingdom when asked about the attempts to move the Democrat Party further to the left, saying that a “glass of water” could have won in Ocasio-Cortez’s New York district.
Pelosi was asked about the future of the Democrat Party, and she maintained that the party must keep a centrist line if it hopes to remain nationally competitive.
“When we won this election, it wasn’t in districts like mine or Alexandria’s,” said Pelosi. “And she’s a wonderful member of Congress, I think all of our colleagues will attest. But those are districts that are solidly Democratic.”
She then gestured at a glass of water provided for her speech, and said “This glass of water would win with a D next to its name in those districts,” seeming to insult the intelligence of Democrat voters.
Pelosi then claimed that she shares all of Ocasio-Cortez’s beliefs, but now is not the time to mention them for strategic reasons. Instead, Pelosi seemed to suggest Democrats should focus on appearing centrist until they hold important offices, and then surprise Americans with the far left policies, from universal healthcare to the Green New Deal, that Ocasio-Cortez advocates.
“What we’re saying is to have a message that appeals to people that does not menace them, that really does address their concerns,” Pelosi said. “When we win, and we have the White House, and we have that, then we can expand our exuberance to some other things.”
Pelosi has faced increasing challenges within her own party in the months since the Democrats recaptured the House last year, with President Donald J. Trump saying she is “totally controlled” by radical leftists.
President Donald Trump addressed reporters ahead of his 4 PM announcement on some kind of immigration compromise.
Trump said that Pelosi “is under total control of the radical Left, and that’s a problem.”
Trump-supporting hardliners are hoping that Trump will not offer amnesty to DREAMers in return for Wall funding, even though a solid case could be made for why it’s a good “Art of the Deal” move, forcing Pelosi to be the one who blocks amnesty because she refuses to build the Wall.
It remains to be seen whether Pelosi can carefully chide and persuade her new colleagues to lower the impact of their more radical views, and keep the Democrat Party nationally competitive for the upcoming 2020 election.
