Department of Defense Mistakenly Claims UAE Air Force Plane Loading Afghanis Belongs to US Air Force

Twitter sleuths have pointed out a startling mistake committed by the Department of Defense.

On Sunday the official Department of Defense Twitter account posted photographs of Afghanis boarding an airplane for evacuation at Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International Airport, saying the aircraft was a US Air Force C-17 Globemasters.

But numerous hawk-eyed Twitter users in the replies pointed out a mistake, namely that the plane belongs to the United Arab Emirates Air Force, not the US Air Force:

Some people in the replies pushed back, saying that the US must have sold the plane to the UAE. But they were promptly ratioed by others saying that Boeing, not the US, sold the aircraft to the UAE.

From a Western Journal article on the DOD slip-up:

There are two conceivable explanations for the DOD’s embarrassing blunder, neither of which is particularly encouraging for Americans.

First, the department could be so incompetent that it truly thought the aircrafts were from the U.S. Air Force. This would obviously be a concerning lack of awareness from such an important department.

The second option is that the DOD is actively lying in an attempt to manufacture a positive image to distract from the horrifying ones we have seen for days now.

This appears to be just the latest example of the Biden administration’s incompetence or dishonesty vis-à-vis the withdrawal from Afghanistan. Not a good look.
