Elected Officials Call on DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to Resign

Department of Homeland Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas is feeling the heat.

As it has become clear that the US government is no longer serious about defending its border from a migrant invasion, policymakers are beginning to see that Mayorkas is not up to the job to protect the nation’s border.

Arizona Governor Doug Ducey has also jumped in the calls for Mayorkas to resign. Ducey’s statement came on August 13, one day after border officials revealed that they let 117,000 migrants blow past the country’s southern border in August. The previous month was pretty brutal as far as illegal immigration was concerned. According to John Binder of Breitbart, there were 200,000 illegal border crossers apprehended in July. This represented an increase of 418% compared to July 2020.

Binder continued laying out how the US is reaching near historic levels of illegal migrant crossings:

Not since Fiscal Year 2000, when former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush were in office, has illegal immigration to the U.S. been this high. For example, January 2000 was the last month in the prior two decades that reached nearly 190,000 apprehensions at the southern border.

Then, in February and March 2000, border apprehensions exceeded 200,000 for each month. The totals indicate that under President Joe Biden’s administration, illegal immigration has hit a 21-year high.

In a statement on August 13, Ducey went out of his way to call on Mayorkas to resign:

It is time for Secretary Mayorkas to resign, and for him to be replaced with someone who will tell the American people the truth publicly, stand up to the radical activists inside the Biden-Harris administration and once and for all end the crisis at the southern border. The safety of Arizona and our entire nation depends on it.….

According to some new reports, Mayorkas was “very well” aware that certain parts of the border were on the verge of “breaking.”

“We can’t continue like this, our people in the field can’t continue and our system isn’t built for it,” Mayorkas allegedly stated.

However, the Fox News report only provided small pieces of Mayorkas’s August 12 comments.

According to Neil Munro of Breitbart, Mayorkas has publicly made comments that suggest he is attempting to tame the present surge by legalizing more migration.

During a press conference on August 12, Mayorkas stated:

In the coming days, our department will announce that we are making changes and improvements to how we process asylum claims. We continue to rebuild our immigration system to ensure fairness and promote equity.

Ducey continued unloading on Mayorkas’ negligent leadership with regards to border security:

Today we are seeing the truth of what’s playing out behind closed doors — what the federal government isn’t telling the American people. Chaos, dysfunction and a defeatist attitude has infiltrated the highest level of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. This administration has completely lost control of the border. And with his comments, Secretary Mayorkas demonstrated that he fully understands the catastrophe playing out at the border, and yet he lacks the skill, ability and will to address it adequately.

The buck must stop somewhere. A defeatist is not what we need when it comes to fighting for border security. It is time for Secretary Mayorkas to resign, and for him to be replaced with someone who will tell the American people the truth publicly, stand up to the radical activists inside the Biden-Harris administration and once and for all end the crisis at the southern border. The safety of Arizona and our entire nation depends on it.

Ducey has been somewhat proactive with regards to halting immigration. Back in April, he declared a state of emergency and sent the Arizona National Guard to the southern border. Ducey also had the State Emergency Council get together to immediately allocate funds towards the deployment, which consisted of $2.5 million in addition to $200,000 for county sheriffs..

Similarly, Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton called on Mayorkas to resign as well. On Twitter, Cotton said “Mayorkas has failed and he should resign.” Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville echoed Cotton’s sentiments by also suggesting that Mayorkas step down.

Republican representatives should be jotting down Cotton’s and Ducey’s resignation calls. Immigration is going to be a major issue in the 2022 midterms. Any Republican who actually rides this issue in that election cycle, will be rewarded handsomely by voters. This is the new reality of the post-Bush GOP which has become more favorable towards immigration restriction as a result of the new constituency it has now embraced.

The days of ignoring the immigration question are over.
