Famed Film Director Steven Spielberg Condemns Hamas for Its Attack On Israel

Renowned Jewish movie director Steven Spielberg recently condemned Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023 Spielberg issued a public statement on the attack, where he said: “I never imagined I would see such unspeakable barbarity against Jews in my lifetime.”

The statement appeared in a story featured on the website of the USC Shoah Foundation. This foundation recently launched a new project with the goal of gathering and obtaining firsthand accounts from survivors and witnesses of the October 7 terrorist attack.

Spielberg created the Shoah Foundation after his experience making “Schindler’s List.” This foundation is dedicated to recording the personal stories of Holocaust survivors throughout the 1990s.

The foundation subsequently started gathering testimonies from survivors of other cases of genocides and mass ethnic conflict in Cambodia, Darfur, Rwanda, and other places.

Spielberg announced in the featured piece on the Shoah Foundation website that the new project “will ensure that the voices of survivors will act as a powerful tool to counter the dangerous rise of antisemitism and hate.”

“Both initiatives – recording interviews with survivors of the October 7 attacks and the ongoing collection of Holocaust testimony – seek to fulfill our promise to survivors: that their stories would be recorded and shared in the effort to preserve history and to work toward a world without antisemitism or hate of any kind,” Spielberg was recorded stating in the story published on the website. “We must remain united and steadfast in these efforts.”

Spielberg’s statements are not shocking here. As a Jew, he will naturally feel some degree of solidarity with his co-ethnics in Israel who were brutally attacked by Hamas.

Given that Spielberg is an American citizen he is free to advocate for whatever cause or ethnic group as he sees fit. Nevertheless, Americans should not be obligated to support Israel whether it’s in moral, spiritual, financial or military terms.

This is America, after all. Last time I checked, the US government is supposed to serve the interests of American citizens, not foreigners.
