FBI Report Demonstrates Crime Dropped As Americans Started Buying Firearms In Bulk
FBI figures reported by NBC News on March 19, 2024, show that crime decreased during 2023, a year in which there were over one million background checks conducted on a monthly basis for firearms purchases.
On July 4, 2023, the Washington Examiner highlighted that National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) checks for firearms purchases have been north of a million a month for 47 consecutive months.
NBC News reported on “fourth-quarter numbers” that illustrated “a 13% decline in murder in 2023 from 2022, a 6% decline in reported violent crime and a 4% decline in reported property crime.”
Retired CIA analyst Jeff Asher offered his take on the lower crime numbers:
It suggests that when we get the final data in October, we will have seen likely the largest one-year decline in murder that has ever been recorded.
This declining crime trend has all come about even as gun ownership has increased. It goes to show that an armed populace is often the best deterrent against crime. Americans received a rude awakening about the efficacy of the policy during the Black Lives Matter riots of 2020 when police nationwide backed down and let agitators riot to their hearts’ content. As a result, lawful individuals turned to private gun ownership to secure themselves and their lived ones.
This is laudable behavior that should be constantly encouraged in these times of growing social chaos.
No amount of gun control measures will change this reality. Gun owners must hammer away at the point that the right to bear arms is the most effective way of promoting public safety.
