Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz delivered a speech Wednesday that emphasized foreign policy restraint.

At a Concerned Vets for America event, Gaetz laid out what he called the “Trump Doctrine,” a clear departure from the neoconservative nation-building of the past few decades.

He criticized the “forever war” in Afghanistan, saying that “In Afghanistan, after two decades have passed, trillions spent, and thousands of American lives lost, the situation on the ground is actually getting worse!”

Gaetz went on to comment about the follies of nation building:

Although Gaetz emphasized the need for foreign policy restraint, he by no means suggested that the entire military be gutted. The Florida congressman still wants America to be the most powerful military force in the globe.

I never want to send America’s troops into a fair fight. That means providing the funding, equipment, infrastructure & arms to achieve decisive victory every single time. The US military must & will remain the biggest, strongest & most lethal fighting force in human history.

Gaetz highlighted importance of strong borders and how America must focus on securing its own borders instead of fighting for other countries’ interests.

One of the high points of Gaetz’s speech was his direct shot at defense interests and other groups that want to launch America into perpetual wars.

Real morality and real toughness is standing up to the pro-war special interests and globalist powerbrokers. Real morality is affirming forever that the blood of American troops is not for sale.

Overall, Gaetz’s speech presented a new path for American foreign policy. Gaetz has been consistent in his vision for an America First foreign policy by voting for a resolution to end the Yemeni Civil War and by also advocating for a non-interventionist course of action in Venezuela.
