Finland: State-Sponsored Study Shows Foreign-Born Migrants Hugely Overrepresented in Sex Crimes

Figures from a new state-sponsored study in Finland have revealed that foreign-born individuals are vastly overrepresented when it comes to sex crimes.
The study, which found that foreign-born individuals – despite comprising less than seven percent of Finland’s population – accounted for nearly 38 percent of the country’s rape suspects in 2020, comes on the heels of a Swedish study which revealed that first-generation immigrants were almost three times as likely to be suspects in rape cases than native-born Swedes with Swedish parents.
In total, the study’s data – collected between 2011 and 2020 – showed that foreign-born individuals accounted for 27 percent of suspects in rape cases and 15 percent those suspected of child sexual abuse. According to the researchers involved in the study, young foreign-born males were most likely to be perpetrators of child sexual exploitation.
Even more alarming, recent years have witnessed the percentage of foreign-born individuals suspected of sexual abuse against children rise more sharply than migrant adult-on-adult rape cases have in recent years, climbing as high as 24 percent in 2019.
The study’s researchers emphasized that foreign-born individuals’ overrepresentation in sex crime can’t be explained alone by their social disadvantage, citing additional contributing risk factors like antisocial behavior, substance abuse, mental illness, and criminal pasts.
Researchers also downplayed the significance of perpetrators’ nationalities, regions of origin, cultural profiles, and religious affiliations, claiming instead that factors like impulsivity, emotional regulation problems, poor problem-solving skills, low self-esteem were mostly to blame.
Responding to the study’s regrettable findings, Finland’s Interior Minister Maria Ohisalo admitted that problems with integration clearly exist and must be addressed immediately.
“These are very worrying figures,” she said. “It is certainly not the case that people have failed to understand how human rights and people’s integrity are respected in this society. Yes, there is something to do on the side of the government.”
