President Donald Trump is scheduled for his first visit to the United Kingdom next week, but London Mayor Sadiq Khan has a bit of a surprise waiting for him when he arrives.
A six-meter (20ft) tall blimp, depicting an angry and diaper-clad Trump will be taking flight over Parliament Square Gardens on July 13th. The blimp will only be tethered to the ground, however, and restricted from floating more than 30m (98ft) in the air above Parliament Square Gardens.
The orange “Trump Baby” balloon costs over £700 to fill with helium, which is around $925, and has been approved to fly between 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. on the 13th, by none other than Sadiq Khan himself. A spokesperson for Khan said: “The Mayor supports the right to peaceful protest and understands that this can take many different forms. His city operations team have met with the organisers and have given them permission to use Parliament Square Garden as a grounding point for the blimp.”
The request to fly the blimp was approved after a crowdfunding campaign raised more than £16,000 (around $21,200), and over 10,000 people signed a petition that called on the mayor to “let Trump Baby fly”. The group behind the “Trump Baby” balloon stunt call themselves anti-fascist “art activists” and are now liaising with the Met and Civil Aviation Authority to ensure London’s airspace is safely managed that day.
Under a photo on the crowdfunder campaign page for the balloon, you can see they don’t plan to only use the balloon the day of Trump’s visit to the United Kingdom, they plan to take it around the world: “We now have easily enough money to make him fly on the 13th! Any donations to the crowdfunder from here on in will go to support the Trump Baby World Tour! See updates!”
One of the Activists, Leo Murray told Sky News: “We didn’t get off to the best start with the Mayor’s office over this, who originally told us that they didn’t recognise Trump Baby as a legitimate protest. But following a huge groundswell of public support of our plan, it looks like City Hall has rediscovered its sense of humour. Trump Baby will fly!”
Murray went on to describe the balloon as an “obscene mutant clone of the president” and says it will “hold up a huge mirror of truth” to the world.
