Connecticut Democrat Senator Chris Murphy responded to the news of President Trump’s coronavirus diagnosis with the most predictable response possible for a member of his party- bringing up Russia conspiracy theories.

Speaking on CNN Friday, Murphy claimed that Vladimir Putin would act as a “Trump surrogate” for the period in which the President is unable to campaign while recuperating.

“You have to be much more serious about the Russian threat given today’s news,” Murphy told CNN’s Jim Sciutto. “If President Trump can’t be out there on the campaign trail for the next two weeks, then he is going to rely on his surrogates and, unfortunately, one of his surrogates is Vladimir Putin.

That doesn’t even make any sense. You wouldn’t think that the President of the Russian Federation would be actively campaigning for an American President responsible for placing more sanctions on his country than ever before and terminating arms agreements between the US and Russia, but this doesn’t matter to hysterical neoliberal Democrats still obsessed with baseless Russia conspiracy theories more than a year after Robert Mueller’s witch hunt ended as a colossal nothingburger.

So you are likely going to see this campaign ramped up by Russia over the next few weeks to try to substitute for the president’s absence on the campaign trail,” Murphy claimed. “And my worry is that the intel agencies are not being clear with the American people about the size of the Russian operation and their clear desire to try to elect President Trump to a second term.

Unhinged, delusional conspiracy theorist. At least Murphy will have a (fictional and weak) excuse in the event Trump defeats Biden in November, a possibility most Democrats are refusing to entertain.
