Joe Manchin Leaves Democratic Party To Become An Independent Candidate
On May 31, 2024, West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia announced that he was leaving the Democratic Party and will now be under the banner of an independent.
Manchin announced in November that he would not be running for re-election for his senate seat. Manchin is 76 years old and has been a member of the Senate since 2010 and a member of the Democratic Party for multiple decades.
He made the announcement on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, declaring that he wanted to “bring the country together.”
“My commitment to do everything I can to bring our country together has led me to register as an independent with no party affiliation,” Manchin stated.
West Virginia’s deadline to register to run for public office as an independent candidate is August 1. However, state law allows the Secretary of State to reject the certification of a candidate if they switched parties in under 60 days of filing, per an NBC News report. Manchin was the governor of West Virginia from 2005 to 2010 prior to running for senate in a special election after the death of long-time Democrat Senator Robert Byrd.
Manchin is the second Democratic senator to change parties since 2022 when Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona left the party in December 2022 and registered under the independent banner. In a similar vein, West Virginia Governor Jim Justice switched parties back in 2017 and registered under the Republican banner.
The Democratic Party has turned into a multicultural asylum that has become hostile to European Americans. As a result, any white elected officials within the party’s ranks will likely be jumping ship. Expect more like Manchin to follow suit.
