Judicial Watch Sues Justice Department for Ignoring FOIA Requests About Social Media Censorship Collusion

Conservative watchdog organization Judicial Watch filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit in late January against the Department of Justice (DOJ) for records of correspondence between the FBI and social platforms about foreign interference in elections. Most notably this included the censorship of the Hunter Biden laptop story.

Judicial Watch decided to pursue legal action after the FBI’s refusal to respond to a FOIA request submitted in August 2022. The watchdog organization desired to obtain all correspondence between the FBI and social media platforms concerning foreign actors allegedly disseminating misinformation connected to the election and all communications about Hunter Biden’s laptop.

Following billionaire magnate Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter in October 2022, he began putting out internal documents, better known as “Twitter Files,” which exposed Twitter’s blatant censorship of accounts and content. Prominent among these cases was the censorship of the Hunter Biden laptop story. In addition, the files also exposed how the FBI repeatedly put pressure on Twitter executives to suspend certain accounts and posts.

On top of that, the FBI was exposed for paying Twitter over $3 million as compensation for kowtowing to its requests.

“The FBI was literally paying Twitter to censor Americans just before the 2020 election!” Tom Fitton, Judicial Watch’s president declared in a statement. “The FBI seems to have interfered in the 2020 election to help Joe Biden by encouraging Big Tech to censor Americans about the Hunter Biden laptop and other debates. And to add to the scandal, they are now covering up their misconduct.”

Judicial Watch sent the FOIA request to the FBI in hopes of finding other cases of censorship.

It goes without saying that the FBI needs to be held accountable. Moreover, it needs to be defanged and abolished in the long-term. Good on Judicial Watch for pursuing legal action against the FBI. It’s the first step that must be taken to check this abomination of a government agency.
