Justin Amash’s Political Career is Now in Jeopardy With a New Primary Challenger Announcement

State Rep. Jim Lower is now Amash’s second primary challenger as grassroots anger builds against the libertarian Republican.

Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI) earned massive praise from the leftist resistance this weekend, after the GOP’s most prominent ‘Never Trumper’ formally endorsed impeachment of President Donald Trump in a series of tweets.

While Amash may have curried favor with liberals who oppose the President, a fervor is growing against him within the Michigan Republican Party. State Rep. Jim Lower (R-Greenville) wasted no time in announcing his primary challenge, and he believes his experience in Michigan state politics gives him the pedigree to mount a credible challenge to Amash.

“I am a Pro-Trump, Pro-Life, Pro-Jobs, Pro-2nd Amendment, Pro-Family Values Republican. Congressman Justin Amash tweets yesterday calling for President Trump’s impeachment show how out of touch he is with the truth and how out of touch he is with people he represents,” Lower said in a press release announcing his candidacy.

He continued: “Amash has not only failed to support President Trump as the President works to make the United States stronger and safer, he has now united with radical liberals like Democratic Congresswomen Rashida Tlaib (D-Detroit) to try and bring down our President. He must be replaced and I am going to do it.”

Amash has received favor from Tlaib, a radical socialist Muslim, and Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), another Islamist who is known for making incendiary remarks against Jews, for his support of impeachment.

Lower confirmed that he was already planning to primary Amash, as the Grand Rapids Congressman had been opposing Trump for years on issues such as immigration, trade, foreign policy, and others.

“It is never easy to defeat an incumbent, but we are going to do it. I have been quietly been meeting with grassroots activists, party leaders, voters, donors, and elected officials in the 3rd Congressional District and the response has been humbling and gratifying,” he said.

“I have also already hired my political team, which I will be announcing later this week. It will take at least $1 million to beat Amash and we believe we can raise that amount and more,” Lower added.

Lower points to Amash’s record, including his votes to continue funding planned parenthood, reject military foreign aid to Israel, oppose a resolution condemning illegal immigrants in the voting booth, and other votes as reasons he is unfit to represent the GOP in 2020.

“Contrast Amash’s record with my own record of accomplishments in just 2 ½ years in Lansing. I will be a strong voice, vote and leader for West Michigan, all you need to do is compare our records,” Lower said.

Lower boasts endorsements from Right to Life, the National Rifle Association, the Michigan Farm Bureau, and the Michigan Chamber of Commerce to show off his conservative credentials.

“West Michigan deserves a congressman who will actually represent the values of our community, and who will work with President Trump and other members of Congress to get things done. I will be that Congressman,” Lower said to conclude his press release.

Amash has another primary challenger, veterans’ rights activist Tom Norton, who has announced his run. More contenders may throw their hats in the ring in the upcoming weeks, as Amash is perceived as vulnerable following his support for impeaching President Trump.

Greg Abbott Signs Executive Order Keeping Violent Criminals from Going Back on the Streets During the Wuhan Crisis

After the Wuhan Virus was confirmed in several Texas jails in the last week, Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued an executive order on March 29, 2020 that makes it more difficult for several inmates to be let out on “no-cost, personal recognizance bonds.”

Abbott tweeted, “Today I issued an Executive Order preventing [email protected] of dangerous criminals from prisons & jails. We want to prevent the spread of #COVID19 among prison staff & inmates. But, releasing dangerous criminals in the streets is not the solution. #txlege #coronavirus

Several cases of the Wuhan Virus were discovered in the Dallas County Jail and Harris County Jail last week, two of the state’s largest jails. In addition, a handful of cases were confirmed in state prisons. According to NBC DFW, the virus’ outbreak was “followed by demands to reduce the inmate populations by releasing, immediately and without bond or judicial delay, those held on misdemeanor crimes or awaiting trial on misdemeanor crimes. Some also called for non-violent felons to also be released on no-cost bonds.”

Abbott said Sunday that “releasing dangerous criminals makes the state even less safe” and issued a proclamation to prevent judges, and others, from releasing some inmates without a paid, cash bond.

In his executive order, Abbott declared that a person convicted of a crime that involved or threatened physical violence, or a person arrested for such a crime backed by probable cause, or a person with a criminal history of violent crime, cannot get out of jail on a no-cost personal recognizance bond.

With a PR bond, a defendant is released without having to post any money for his or her bond on the promise they’ll show up to their next court date.

Instead of virtue signaling and buying into the criminal justice reform movement’s desire to foment anarcho-tyranny, Abbott has held his ground by promoting public order.

A crisis like the Wuhan Virus pandemic does not need to be exacerbated by opening up the prison floodgates.

This is one case where American policymakers should use logic not emotion to craft prison policies in times of a pandemic.

Failure to do so will put the U.S. on the road to institutional failure.
