Leader of Lithuania is Scared that Donald Trump Will Pull the US Out of NATO

During an interview on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis declared that a United States withdrawal from Europe would be a “nightmare scenario”, especially during a time when Russia is carrying out military operations in Ukraine.

“Europe as it is now is in great peril and we’re definitely counting the hours till the next phase of Russian escalation,” Landsbergis stated. Global stability “hangs on the transatlantic connection,” added.

Doubts about the US’s commitment to NATO are beginning to resurface with the prospect of Donald Trump being re-elected. European officials are beginning to worry the US could slash military aid to Ukraine and even exit NATO.

Thus far, the US Congress has still not been able to hammer out an agreement on a military aid package for Ukraine.

Landsbergis believes that the US debate over military aid doesn’t adequately cover the dangers of Russia’s military operation to American interests. On top of that, Landsbergis believes that if Ukraine doesn’t stave off Russia’s invasion, “others will have to do the job.” He even hinted at Russia potentially targeting a NATO member nation next. “Everybody in the region is asking themselves a question: so who will have to do that?”

There’s clearly worries about the US’s security role in an increasingly multipolar world among European elites. On top of that, the US is growing more dysfunctional domestically, which will limit its ability to project power abroad.

With all of this considered, the Europeans would be wise to start pursuing a more independent foreign policy that doesn’t rely on the US for security functions. Such an advanced civilization should never have to play the role of a vassal on the world stage.
