Lunatic South Carolina Senator Calls for Bombing Iran

On December 27, 2023, South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham called for the United States government to carry out military strikes against Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps inside of Iran.

“I’ve been saying [this] for six months now,” Graham stated during an appearance on Fox News, “hit Iran. They have oil fields out in the open. They have a Revolutionary Guard headquarters you can see from space. Blow it off the map.”

These comments came at a time when tensions have been simmering in the Middle East. Starting that week, the Israelis killed a leading IRGC official in Syria. Subsequently Iran-supported militias have launched attacks against US bases in Iraq, leaving three soldiers wounded while the Houthis in Yemen have launched several attacks in the Red Sea, which compelled the US Navy to shoot down at least 17 drones and missiles. The US also launched attacks against positions in Iraq that were allegedly connected to Iran.

On December 27, President Joe Biden sent a letter to leading congressional officials outlining his decision to launch strikes in Iraq, immediately after it was revealed that a US serviceman suffered critical injuries.

“The strikes were intended to degrade and disrupt the ongoing series of attacks against the United States and our partners,” Biden declared, “and to deter Iran and Iran-backed militia groups from conducting or supporting further attacks on United States personnel and facilities.”

That said, Graham was not satisfied with Biden’s response.

“The Biden administration is failing our troops in the field,” declared Senator Graham. “If you really want to protect American soldiers, make it real to the Ayatollah, you attack a soldier through proxy, we’re coming after you.”

Since the middle of October, Iran-affiliated militia groups in Iraq and Syria have carried out attacks against US forces over a hundred times since the middle of October.

For its part, Israel also wants to dial up tensions against Iran and its proxies. On December 27, Benny Gantz, a key member of Israel’s war cabinet, floated the idea of launching another war with Hezbollah in Lebanon.

“If the world and the Lebanese government don’t act in order to prevent the firing on Israel’s northern residents, and to distance Hezbollah from the border, the IDF will do it,” Ganz declared during a press conference.

Despite being a non-state entity, Hezbollah has an impressive arsenal of over a hundred thousand missiles and plenty of combat experience which could give Israel headaches like Hezbollah previously did in 2006.

Tensions are undeniably mounting in the Middle East. However, the last thing we need is to listen to the likes of Lindsey Graham for foreign policy advice in this critical moment of international affairs. Now, more than ever, the US should adhere to the sage principles of realism and restraint.
