Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg Announces End of Orwellian ‘Fact Checking’ Program
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the end of the Orwellian “fact checking” program that has been used as an excuse to censor non-leftwing views and outlets on Facebook and Instagram for years.
“We’re going to get back to our roots and focus on reducing mistakes, simplifying our policies and restoring free expression on our platforms,” Zuckerberg said in a video published on Tuesday morning.
“More specifically, here’s what we’re going to do. First, we’re going to get rid of fact checkers and replace them with community notes similar to X, starting in the U.S.,” he added.
Zuckerberg has strategically tried to distance himself from the “woke” status quo that he helped propagate in recent months.
“The recent elections also feel like a cultural tipping point towards, once again, prioritizing speech,” he said. “So we’re going to get back to our roots and focus on reducing mistakes, simplifying our policies and restoring free expression on our platforms.”
As part of his rehabilitation campaign, Zuckerberg gave $1 million to President Trump’s inauguration fund and announced that UFC President Dana White, a close Trump ally, would be joining Meta’s board.
“We have massive opportunities ahead in AI, wearables, and the future of social media, and our board will help us achieve our vision,” Zuckerberg said on Monday after White’s appointment was announced.
“I love social media. And I’m excited to be a small part of the future of AI and emerging technologies,” White said in an Instagram post following the announcement.
Zuckerberg’s shift shows how Trump has changed the culture with his political resurrection. However, Zuckerberg should not be able to paper over the responsibility he has for his actions. He committed mass censorship, contributed to the election steal in 2020, and hurt the country immeasurably. Zuckerberg and all the tech elites must be put to justice for what they have done.
