Missouri Elected Officials Back Away From Passing Legislation To Repeal Several “Gun-Free Zones”

Republicans in the Missouri state legislature won’t proceed to advance two pro-Second bills that were gaining traction this session in the aftermath of a mass shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory parade on February 14, 2024.

Republicans in Missouri balked at advancing this legislation despite the two suspected shooters who were arrested being juveniles who aren’t old enough to legally own a firearm. Moreover, there’s no evidence thus far that any of the other potential suspects implicated in the shooting are lawful gun owners.

A KSMU report noted that one of the bills would have let concealed carry permit holders carry firearms on public transportation, which includes  buses, in addition to places of worship. The other bill would have lifted states and local sales taxes on firearms and ammunition.

House Majority Floor Leader Jon Patterson, a Republican, declared that although both bills had their merits, “they have no path to becoming law at this point.”

“Now is not the appropriate time to be taking up those bills and therefore they will not be brought up this session,” Patterson stated.

The shooting that took place at the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory parade, which resulted in the death of one person and 20 other people injured. Missouri is one of the more pro-gun states in the nation, especially after it passed Constitutional Carry in 2016.

Missouri is currently ranked in 19th place according to Guns & Ammo best states for gun owners rankings. Passing these two pro-gun measures would only bolster the state’s pro-gun profile.

Let’s be blunt here. The right time to pass pro-gun measures is now. The Left simply does not care about manners and they will exploit each and every crisis they can to impose their policies consequences and sensitivity be damned.

The Right needs to stop caring about decency and optics when it comes to its politics. It needs to start thinking about power accumulation and policy victories that hurt its rivals.

This is the mindset that’s needed by the Right to come out on top and crush their opposition.
