Montana Congressman Matt Rosendale Introduces Immigration Moratorium Bill

On January 12, 2024, Montana Matt Rosendale introduced a broad immigration restriction reform bill that includes measures to “shut down the border” and scrap critical Biden-era policies that Republican immigration hawks blame for the unprecedented crisis at the southern border.

Rosendale’s package introduces or re-introduces five bills that would restrict illegal alien invaders entries into the US, restore Trump-era policies that Republicans have argued actually slowed down illegal immigration and limited the effects of mass immigration on the US.

The “Remain in Mexico Act” would bring back the Trump-era policy of the same name that kept migrants in Mexico as they waited for their asylum hearings as opposed to being let loose into the US.

Advocates of this program argued that it halted a key pull factor attracting migrants to the border but was scrapped by the Biden regime, who wants to maintain open borders in the US.

An additional bill in the package would make it a federal crime to run away from law enforcement at checkpoints. .

On top of that, the American Worker Protection Act largely deals with legal immigration and would implement a Trump-era regulation concerning H-1B visas, a guest worker program that Big Tech routinely uses to suppress worker wages and guarantee a constant stream of cheap labor.

This regulation was an effort to halt the displacement of American workers by cheaper foreign labor. It changed the method for determining the wage level that must be complied with by companies looking to import foreign workers as opposed to using the current lottery system. The Biden regime scrapped this rule.

Rosendale’s Mass Immigration Reduction Act would also implement a moratorium on most immigration for five years. The moratorium will be  lifted once the number of illegal alien crossings reaches below 10,000 annually. In fiscal 2023, there were over 2.4 million illegal alien crossings.

Last but certainly not least, the Count Only Citizens Act would mandate the Census Bureau to have a citizenship and legal presence question in the census so that illegal aliens are not counted for congressional representation purposes.

“Biden is destroying our country with his open border policies,” Rosendale declared in a statement. “My immigration bills will set the proper mechanisms in place to shut down the border, give DHS the tools to pursue criminals evading border checkpoints, encourage American companies to hire American employees, protect taxpayer dollars by only counting citizens in the census and require those waiting on an immigration hearing to wait in Mexico.”

“This package puts into statute the many successful policies that President Trump implemented and will not only tackle the crisis head on, but it will also reverse the reckless, crime-encouraging, open-border policies of the Biden administration,” Rosendale added.

Rosendale’s bill package is a good first step. Immigration is an existential crisis that requires a firm response from the political class. There needs to be representatives who step up to the plate and introduce even stronger immigration restriction measures such as a multi-decade immigration moratorium.

If we can’t get this issue settled, the US as we know it, will collapse.
