NATO Secretary Jens Stoltenberg Proclaims Alliance Will Provide a United Response to Attacks on “Critical Infrastructure”

During an appearance on NBC on October 2, 2022, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that NATO will respond in a firm and united manner to any attack on its critical infrastructure.

“Any deliberate attack on critical NATO infrastructure will be met with a firm and united response from NATO,” Stoltenberg stated.

These comments came at a time when Ukrainian forces are making gradual territorial gains in Eastern Ukraine and after the Nord Stream pipelines were sabotaged by yet to be determined actors.

Russia has recently ordered a partial mobilization of 300,000 reservists with previous military experience, in the latest effort to escalate tensions during the Russo-Ukrainian conflict.

Initially branded as a special military operation that had the ostensive goal of demilitarizing Ukraine and liberating the breakaway republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, Russia’s latest foray into Ukraine appears to be taking a more conventional military path where the country will look to dish out a devastating military blow to Ukraine and likely annex large portions of Russian-speaking parts of Eastern Ukraine.

Given that NATO is already supplying Ukraine with copious amounts of military aid, it has turned into a de facto co-belligerent in this conflict. This undoubtedly raises the stakes and could lead to a more drawn out conflict with a tremendous loss of human life. These are the many perils of having the United States be a member of a mega-alliance such as NATO. There’s no telling how much these conflicts can spiral out of control.

Let’s hope more sober diplomatic minds step up to the plate and put an end to this bloodshed.
