New Jersey Congressman Calls for the Kurds to Be Used as a Battering Ram Against Iran

On January 30, 2024,  New Jersey Congressman Chris Smith, a Republian, told Iraqi Kurdish media outlet Rudaw that the Kurdistan Region must have the tools to defend itself. This comment came after a recent Iranian attack on the Erbil province of Iraq — a city in Iraqi Kurdistan that is notorious for being filled with Israeli spooks and Kurdish militants that are willing to cooperate with Israel and the US to cause trouble for Iran.

Smith specifically called for the US government to provide the Kurds with missile defense systems

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched at least 10 ballistic missiles towards different parts of Erbil province on January 15. They did so under the alleged suspicion that these parts of Erbil were host to Israeli Mossad bases and headquartered anti-Iranian organizations. At least five of the missiles were launched towards the residence of Peshraw Dizayee, a renowned Kurdish businessman, which resulted in the death of Dizayee, his 11-month-old daughter, and two others.

“They [Kurds] need the ability to defend themselves,” Smith said to Rudaw’s Diyar Kurda, stressing that he does not believe the Iranian authorities’ assertion that the strike was targeting bases of the Mossad.

“They don’t like the Kurds either,” he continued.

Kurdish and Iraqi authorities have taken exception to Iran’s assertion, describing them as “baseless.”

“Yes… I hope they [Joe Biden administration] do. There has got to be a protection. Missiles are dropping everywhere and now they are dropping, or have dropped, in Erbil,” Smith continued.

Since October 17, 2023, militias connected to Iran have launched attacks against bases held by the US and its allies in Iraq and Syria with rockets and drones at least 165 times. US forces have responded with several retaliatory strikes, killing at least 12 militiamen in Iraq.

Iraqi authorities have sharply criticized the American retaliatory strikes as a “violation” of its sovereignty, and has manifested its desire to kick out coalition forces from Iraq.

The Kurds are merely pawns for the American-Zionist axis, who are using Kurds and other ethnic groups in Iran’s multi-ethnic polity to create a Fifth Column to undermine the Islamic Republic.

Again, the best option for the US is to exercise realism and restraint by going the non-interventionist route on foreign policy.
