New Mexico Governor is Promoting Prohibition On AR-15 and Other Semi-Automatic Firearms

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham is advocating for a prohibition  on AR-15s and other semi-automatic rifles in an forthcoming 30-day legislative session.

According to a report by The Santa Fe Reporter, Grisham wants to do what New Mexico Senator Martin Heinrich unsuccessfully attempted at the federal level. Heinrich, together with Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, introduced the Gas-Operated Semiautomatic Firearms Exclusion Act (GOSAFE), and it went nowhere.

Grisham believes New Mexico elected officials will be more open to prohibiting an entire category of guns than Heinrich and Kelly’s federal colleagues were.

The Sante Fe Reporter quoted her saying, “Let’s try that vehicle in our own assault weapons ban in New Mexico. Because one thing I have that the senator doesn’t have is I’ve got a set of lawmakers that are more likely than not to have a fair debate about guns, gun violence, weapons of war, and keeping New Mexicans safe.”

Grisham previously garnered national attention on September 8, 2023, for issuing an executive order to prohibit concealed or open carry in large cities such as Albuquerque. The prohibition also banned licensed concealed carriers from possessing their guns for self-defense.

Grisham is a petty tyrant of the highest order. Like most Democrat governors, Grisham is hell-bent on destroying the Second Amendment.

For its part, New Mexico is ranked 34th place in Guns & Ammo magazine’s best states for gun owners. New Mexico is clearly going down an anti-gun path and will continue to go down that route with Grisham at the helm.

Gun owners will have to either rely on litigation, nullification, or outright leave the state to see some semblance of gun freedom restored.
