New Study Shows Natural Immunity Provides Greater Protection Against Delta Variant Than Vaccination

A new study authored by health officials in California and New York indicates that natural immunity provided even more stringent protection against stringent illness than the vaccines during the high mark of the delta variant of coronavirus in the summer. The Centers for Disease Control released the study, “COVID-19 Cases and hospitalizations by COVID-19 Vaccination Status and Previous COVID-19 Diagnosis,” on Wednesday.

Health officials in the two coastal states gathered data from May to November of 2021 for the study. The study indicated that people who previously incurred a case of coronavirus were less likely to test positive for the disease subsequently compared to those who had solely been vaccinated, possibly giving natural immunity a leg up against the vaccines when it comes to avoiding reinfection from the disease.

The study did demonstrate the efficacy of the coronavirus vaccines against severe illness and death, however. In fact, individuals who possessed both natural immunity from prior coronavirus infection and the benefits of vaccines had the best health outcomes in the study, making the case for the medicine. Individuals who were never vaccinated or previously infected had the worst health outcomes.

The study was specifically designed to evaluate protections against the delta variant of coronavirus, a more lethal strain that has since been surpassed by the more transmissible and milder omicron variant. Omicron has since accounted for more than 99% of the coronavirus cases in the United States.

Public health officials in other countries have proven far more willing to recognize natural immunity, with nations in Europe and Israel counting recovering from a prior infection as equivalent to receiving a vaccine. Such exemptions from vaccine passport systems are unheard of in the United States.
