New York Attorney General Letitia James Files Lawsuit Against Firearm Accessory Manufacturer

On May 11, 2023 New York Attorney General Letitia James filed a lawsuit against Mean Arms, a Georgia-based firearms accessory manufacturer, for its alleged role in illegally possessing so-called assault weapons in New York. The lawsuit came after a grisly incident in Buffalo, where a gunman used Mean Arms’ magazine lock, better known as the MA Lock, to replace magazines in his AR-15. This allowed the murderer to follow through with a mass shooting that resulted in the deaths of 10 individuals.

Per the lawsuit, Mean Arms allegedly used deceptive promotional tactics for the MA Lock by depicting it as a device that makes weapons compliant with New York’s gun laws. However, the state of New York claims that the lock can be easily removed, which allowed the gunman to tack on 30-round detachable magazines to the firearm used in the massacre. The Attorney General contended that Mean Arms’ marketing practices and instructions on how to take out the lock were contributing factors to the illegal possession of assault weapons in the state.

The NY lawsuit is pursuing several “remedies”, which includes a halt to Mean Arms’ operations in New York, restitution, damages, and civil penalties for how the company allegedly violated state law. Additionally, the Attorney General plans on forcing Mean Arms to issue corrective statements about the misleading assertions made concerning the MA Lock.

James’ thuggery on this occasion is to be expected from an elected official hailing from New York — one of the most anti-gun jurisdictions in the country. Per Guns & Ammo magazine’s best states for gun owners rankings, New York is in last place at 51st place.

Simply put, New York is a state where gun rights go to die.
