New York Republicans Call Out State Democrats For Shutting Down Gun Business

New York Republican elected officials, which includes Congresswoman Elise Stefanik and New York State Senator Mark Walczyk, are criticizing state Democrats over the series of gun control regulations that allegedly forced Remington Arms to shut down its factory in Ilion, New York.
On December 1, 2023, Remington announced the closure of the factory. This factory was first opened nearly 200 years ago.
In a memo it sent to Ilion employees, Remington said “I am writing to inform you that RemArms, LLC has decided to close its entire operation at 14 Hoefler Avenue, NY 13357. The Company expects that operations at the Ilion Facility will conclude on or about March 4, 2024.”
In a Times Union report published on December 11, 2023, Stefanik criticized the Empire State’s “unconstitutional gun-grab policies” for bringing about the closure.
Stefanik also called out New York Governor Kathy Hochul, declaring, “Hochul must stop her unconstitutional assault on the Second Amendment now.”
Walcyzk pinned the blame on the Remington closure on the state government’s stringent gun control policies pointing out that the New York state government enacted a state law which weakens protections that gun manufacturers would usually enjoy under the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act. The law in question is called the Gun Industry Liability Law, which then-Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into law in 2021.
As a response to the closure of the Ilion factory, Remington Arms opened a new factory in Georgia to make up for the loss. Further, Remington Arms will continue manufacturing firearms at its Huntsville, Alabama location.
One angle the anti-gun crowd is pursuing is the closure of gun manufacturers and gun vendors. The name of the game here is to impose so many costly regulatory measures that makes it cost prohibitive for firearm businesses to operate.
As a result, prospective gun buyers will have less options to buy from, thereby deprived of their right to bear arms. This is one set of gun control measures that pro-gun advocates will have to be on the lookout for.
