Oklahoma Congressman Markwayne Mullin Missing After Planning ‘Rogue’ Afghanistan Evacuation Mission
An Oklahoma Republican Congressman has reportedly gone missing after planning a ‘rescue’ operation for five US citizens in Afghanistan, with Markwayne Mullin unaccounted for as of Tuesday night.
Mullin’s disappearance follows reports that he sought State Department cooperation in moving large sums of cash to Georgia and Tajikstan successively, with the US Ambassador to Tajikstan declining to help him in working around Tajikstan’s laws on the transportation of cash to the country.
Mullin is reportedly seeking to rescue a woman and her four children, all of whom are US citizens. State Department officials, who warned Mullin repeatedly against the idea of traveling into Afghanistan, confirmed they’re unaware of Mullin’s whereabouts on Tuesday.
Mullin reportedly was planning to hire a helicopter in Georgia or Tajikstan for the rescue operation.
A handful of US citizens remain in Afghanistan following a large-scale evacuation operation that moved more than 100,000 people out of the country, most of them seeking asylum privileges in the United States and other western countries. Most of the Americans in Afghanistan are dual citizens of the two countries.
