Omaha Mayor Signs Prohibition on Bump Stocks & Gun-Building Kits

The mayor of Omaha, Nebraska Jean Stothert recently signed two gun control measures in November. One of the measures prohibits “bump stocks” and the other prohibits gun-building kits.
Curiously, Nebraska’s elections are non-partisan in nature. However, Stothert filed as a Republican “in her filing for the 2017 election,” per Ballotpedia.
According to a report by the Nebraska Examiner, Stothert signed the ban on “bump stocks” on November 16, 2023, while prohibiting gun-building kits on November 9.
Stothert’s freshly signed gun control bills are receiving several legal challenges. Those taking legal action against Stothert are alluding to legislation Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen signed earlier in 2023 tha strips Omaha of its “local charter authority”, which the Omaha local government used to pass stricter control measures than those currently on the books at the state level.
Back in the spring of 2023, the Omaha mayor issued an executive order banning concealed carry in “every building owned or leased by the city,” per a report by WOWT. Stothert issued the order as a response to Nebraska’s passage of Constitutional Carry.
Nebraska is not exactly a staunch pro-gun state. According to Guns & Ammo magazine’s best states for gun owners rankings, Nebraska is ranked in 33rd place. To say that Nebraska has work to do with respect to its gun control laws would be an understatement.
Nevertheless, its recent passage of Constitutional Carry is a welcome development.
What we’re seeing take place in Omaha is likely the model anti-gunners in red states will pursue. Namely, they will use these states’ large population centers as springboards for massive gun grabs. The goal is that these anti-gun safe spaces eventually expand and gobble up the entire state.
In light of such developments, pro-gun activists must be prepared. Keeping tabs on these local governments is of the essence if we want to maintain any semblance of pro-gun freedom in the US. The Left does not rest and it will use whatever means possible to undermine our rights.
