Over 25% of Americans Are Willing to Revolt Against the United States Government
Could America be on the verge of experiencing major political violence?
According to a poll by the University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics that was released on June 30, 2022, over 25% of United States residents are so disenchanted with the way the US government has handled domestic affairs, that they believe it may “soon be necessary to take up arms” against it.
In addition, the survey showed that most American citizens agree that the government is “corrupt and rigged against everyday people like me.”
This survey demonstrated that there is growing distrust with the US government, though the level of distrust varies in accordance with the respondents’ partisan affiliations.
For example, 56% of participants indicated that they generally trust elections to be conducted in a fair manner. Republicans, Democrats, and independents hold different views when it comes to trust in the electoral process.
This issue stems from the litany of election irregularities that took place during the 2020 elections.
80% of Democrats largely trust the way elections are handled in the US. On the other hand, 33% of Republicans trust the electoral process. 51% of independents indicated this same trust in the US government.
Per the poll, 49% of Americans indicated that they “more and more feel like a stranger in my own country.” This sentiment varied along partisan lines. 69% of the respondents who identified as “strong Republicans,” 65% of individuals who self-identified as “very conservative” , and 38% of “strong Democrats” held this belief.
Of the 28% of voters who indicated that they may soon consider launching an armed revolt against the government, 37% said they had firearms in their homes. A third of Republicans shared this sentiment. 35% of independents and 20% of Democrats were in agreement.
Polarization is very much baked into the cake when it comes to US politics. 73% of Republicans believe that “Democrats are generally bullies who want to impose their political beliefs on those who disagree.” Similarly, “an almost identical percentage of Democrats (74%) express that view of Republicans”.
“These poll results are perhaps the starkest evidence of the deep divisions in partisan attitudes rippling through the country,” declared Neil Newhouse, a Republican pollster who ran the survey back in May.
Indeed, tensions in America are reaching all-time highs. Right-wing populists offer the only rational political project that will restore order to the polity and defuse most of the tensions that subversive organizations have largely stoked.
Nevertheless, hard federalism is non-negotiable at this point. The cultural differences on wedge issues ranging from firearms to abortion are too vast for a one-size-fits all approach to be legislated from DC.
If DC continues its universalist path, massive civil unrest will invariably follow.
