Pelosi Warns US Olympians To Not Speak Ill Of China
Nancy Pelosi urged U.S. Olympic athletes not to speak out against the Chinese Communist Party’s human rights abuses while playing in Beijing, warning that athletes shouldn’t risk “incurring the anger” of the “ruthless” CCP.
The House speaker made the comments during a Thursday testimony before the Congressional-Executive Commission on China. Pelosi condemned the Chinese government before touting the Biden administration’s diplomatic boycott of the Winter Games. The boycott will result in American athletes attending the Beijing Olympic Games without any diplomatic attendees from the U.S., including any type of political representatives or heads of state.
“Make no mistake — our athletes should participate,” Pelosi said. “They’ve trained, they’re disciplined, they’ve dreamed, they’ve aspired, they’ve worked hard. But this year we must celebrate them from home as they compete in China.”
The House speaker also suggested that American athletes are better off to avoid badmouthing China, especially when actively completing in Beijing, in order to avoid the wrath of the Chinese Communist Party.
“I would say to our athletes: You’re there to compete. Do not risk incurring the anger of the Chinese government because they are ruthless,” Pelosi said. “I know there is a temptation on the part of some to speak out while they are there. I respect that, but I also worry about what the Chinese government might do to their reputations and to their families.”
Pelosi continued: “So, again, participate, let us celebrate from abroad, and don’t risk thinking that there are any good intentions on the part of the People’s Republic of China’s government — because there are none.”
It seems that it is not only Americans who harbor criticism towards the Chinese Communist Party, with some international athletes apparently planning on boycotting Friday’s opening ceremony.
The Chinese Communist Party has in a very typical fashion not managed to garner the trust of many in the international community, resulting in the FBI on Monday urging all US athletes who plan on competing in the Beijing Olympic Games to leave their phones in America. Such warnings were issued due to what the FBI describes as “potential threats associated with mobile applications developed by untrusted vendors.”
Pelosi concluded her bit by saying, “We wish all of the athletes well. We wish them safety — and that safety includes: Don’t for one moment believe what the Chinese government might tell you about freedom of expression. You take a risk. Be safe.”
