POLL: Nearly 60% of Swing State Voters Support Trump Tariffs on China
According to a recently published New York Times/Siena College poll, close to 60% of swing state voters back United States tariffs on Chinese imports that President Donald Trump slapped on Chinese goods.
The poll surveyed likely voters from Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. It found that 57% of likely voters from those states support the tariffs. Fewer than 30% of swing state voters are against US tariffs on China.
John Binder of Breitbart News observed that white working class voters in the aforementioned states are the most receptive towards the concept of imposing tariffs on China to protect working and middle class jobs in addition to shield America’s manufacturing sector.
66% of white working class voters in these six swing states back Trump’s China tariffs, while only 20% are against the tariffs. In a similar vein, 57% of white college-educated voters and 56% of non-white college-educated voters support the tariffs. 83% of likely Republican voters in the aforementioned swing states back tariffs against China.
Tariffs are a rational alternative to income taxation. After all, tariffs target consumption and are not as intrusive as the traditional income taxation model. In fact, tariffs were a hallmark of the Gilded Age (1880-1920), America’s freest period where the federal government played a minuscule role in the economy and sound money was the norm.
Obviously, there needs to be a wholesale reduction in the size of the federal government and a reversion to sound money for economic normalcy to go into effect. Nevertheless, tariffs can play a role in a political economy that is no longer dominated by income taxation.
