Pro-Palestinian Students Urge University To Take Down Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir’s Name From Library
Pro-Palestinian students at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee are urging the university remove the name of former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir off the campus library.
This petition is being organized by UW Students for a Democratic Society, Muslim Students Association, and the Wisconsin Coalition for Justice in Palestine.
Meir was a graduate from the university in 1917, per the Wisconsin Historical Society. She was the Prime Minister of Israel between 1969 to 1974.
On top of that, the pro-Palestinian protestors want to see the university “Divest from weapon manufacturers that aid the Palestinian genocide in ‘Israel’” and “End all study abroad trips to ‘Israel.’”
This activism campaign featured a rally that took place in December where a prominent speaker, Patricia Fish, declared “Meir was a Zionist known for her crimes against Palestine.”
Another spokesperson said “it is crucial to recognize that boycotting and protesting are not acts of hostility toward any particular group, but rather expressions of our commitment to justice, human rights, and the fundamental principles of equality.”
The rally was followed by a “prayer and vigil” meant to honor the “martyrs of Palestine.” During the rally students wrote the names of these “martyrs” on the library pillars, Fight Back! Reported.
The Israel v. Palestine conflict is very similar to the culture war struggles the US is currently facing. Indeed, there needs to be further scrutiny of individuals’ and institutions’ blind devotion to Israel — a parasitic state that provides very little to no benefits for Middle Americans.
Nevertheless, pro-Palestinian protesters use questionable tactics and often associate with suspect elements of the Left. There are rational ways to protest Israel and rid the country of its pernicious influence.
Make no mistake about it, no university building should ever be named in honor of an Israeli national. Moreover, it should not be replaced with the name of another foreigner.
Such institutions must be named after Americans, and ultimately serve the interests of Americans.
