Republican House Members Call On Speaker Johnson To Not Renew the Undetectable Firearms Act

74 members of the United States House sent Speaker Mike Johnson a letter on January 31, 2024 calling on him to oppose the renewal of the Undetectable Firearms Act (1988).

This letter was endorsed by Gun Owners of America. It read as follows:

As we head into the 2024 election year, the Republican conference will have numerous opportunities to prove to the American people why our party should be entrusted with continued control of the House of Representatives. One of our first opportunities to demonstrate a Republican Commitment to America will be to emphatically reject any permanent reauthorization or expansion of the Undetectable Firearms Act.

The letter adds that the continued existence of the Undetectable Firearms Act could allow the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) to redefine words and phrases, thereby broadening the number of firearms the Act regulates.

The 74 House members specifically alluded to the way in which the ATF recategorized incomplete pistol frames as guns. AWR Hawkins of Breitbart News noted that back in December 27, 2022, the ATF published a letter in which the agency re-emphasized that “partially complete pistol frames” are “firearms.”

The ATF’s decision to redefine firearm  parts was an extension of Biden’s push for action against guns that Democrats have classified as “ghost guns.” Their new definition formed a  part of ATF Final Rule 2021-05F.

The 74 representatives added, “The Biden administration has already demonstrated its ability to weaponize the Undetectable Firearms Act into a widespread plastic gun ban. Congress must not permanently reauthorize this law, especially while ATF’s final definition of a ‘frame or receiver’ is still being considered in the courts.”

These House Republicans should be commended for their push to get Speaker Johnson to reject this gun grab. This is a solid first step in reversing the gun control state, which has been marked by the consistent passage of illegitimate gun control measures over the last century.

Rolling back this unconstitutional apparatus is one of the key political struggles of our time and it’s one that the Right should not back away from.
