Ron DeSantis Rolls Out “Victims of Communism Day”

On November 7, 2023, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced that day was the second annual “Victims of Communism Day” in the state.

The Florida state government enshrined the day through HB 395 in 2022, which mandates high school students to learn about the brutality of communist regimes.

The bill’s text read as follows:

Beginning in the 2023-2024 school year, high school students enrolled in the United States Government class required by s. 1003.4282(3)(d) must receive at least 45 minutes of instruction on “Victims of Communism Day” to include topics such as Mao Zedong and the Cultural Revolution, Joseph Stalin and the Soviet System, Fidel Castro and the Cuban Revolution, Vladimir Lenin and the Russian Revolution, Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge, and Nicolás Maduro and the Chavismo movement, and how victims suffered under these regimes through poverty, starvation, migration, systemic lethal violence, and suppression of speech.

Despite DeSantis’s flawed presidential campaign, he’s on the mark here. For far too long, the ruling class and intellectuals have downplayed the atrocities connected to Communism.

It’s high time that the record be set straight in an academia that has been thoroughly captured by the Left. Moreover, such moves should serve as springboards for larger cultural offensives against the Left. These types of measures go a long way in challenging many of their holy sacraments.

If we want a truly free society, the Left must be thoroughly purged from academic and political institutions.
